VinaTech has released the 250F 3.8V hybrid supercap. This energy storage component combines a supercap with a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery, but in a single housing. A hybrid supercap or Lithium Ion Capacitor (LIC), utilizes both electrostatic storage of charge, as in supercaps and in addition an electrochemical reactions is activated as in batteries.
Supercapacitors have the advantage of fast charge and discharge, but they have a lower energy density than batteries. On the other hand, batteries have a higher energy density, but they often have a lower charge and discharge rate. A hybrid supercap combines the best of both worlds by providing high energy density while maintaining fast charge and discharge performance.
The VEL13353R8257G measures ∅12.5x35mm. The working voltage of 3.8V is consistent with Li-Ion batteries. The capacity is 250F. Compared to supercaps, the VEL has a favorable ESR of only 50mΩ, thanks to the favorable characteristics of the battery part. A constant current of 0.75A can be delivered with a peak current of 5A for 1 second.Hybrid supercaps do not require any additional certification or transport administration. The weight share of Lithium is too limited for that.
This hybrid storage technology was developed to enable applications requiring both high power density and high energy density, such as in portable electronics.
