Peak shaving at grid congestion

Grid congestion can be a cause that larger capacities are not always available. This applies, for example, to connections at construction sites. Since this limits the maximum peak power of many machines and installations, temporary support can provide a solution.

With the ESC series of bi-directional DC/DC converters, Epic Power has the option of pre-charging the integrated supercaps and, when maximum power is desired, discharging them back onto the DC bus of an inverter. This prevents overloading the grid or preventing the machine from using its maximum capacity.

Depending on the amount of capacity required, i.e. power times time, several units can be connected in parallel. The control is simple. Digital I/O can be used to indicate when to load or unload.

This can apply to such things as electric construction cranes, cement mixers, as well as other building systems or equipment.
