Innovative waterproof seal by overmolding

Metric IMS, Elincom's sister company, has developed a revolutionary technique to make electronics waterproof even at low quantities quickly, cost-effectively and sustainably by overmolding with plastic. This method allows components to be molded partially or completely seamlessly, with the end result being both hard and flexible, depending on the plastic material chosen. This makes the technique extremely versatile and applicable in a variety of industrial applications.

The core of this innovative method lies in the use of advanced 3D printed dies. Electronic components are placed between two dies, after which the space is pneumatically filled with liquid granules at low pressure. By working with lower temperatures and pressures than traditional injection molding, the dies are less stressful and therefore cheaper and faster to produce. This makes the process not only cost-effective, but also suitable for creating complex molds that optimally protect electronics from external factors.

Metric IMS' overmolding technique offers more than just protection. In addition to waterproofing, the molded-in plastic can also provide impact resistance, UV resistance and even a customer-specific "look and feel." Thanks to the flexibility in the production process, it is possible to make cutouts or specific shapes in the mold, for example for sensors, connectors or other connections. This makes it possible not only to provide functional protection, but also to create a personalized enclosure, possibly embossed with a logo.
