Braking resistors in electric ship propulsion

In electric ship propulsion, the ship's propeller is the propulsion of the ship. But when stabilizing the speed or reducing speed, the propeller acts as a generator, generating unwanted braking energy.

Koch offers specific series of braking resistors for this purpose that safely convert this energy.

The BWD series is at the heart of this solution, with models such as the BWD600047K03LIP65IS with 720 W, 15.7 Ω, IP65 connected directly to the drive. This dissipates up to 26 kJ at 6% duty cycle, preventing motor damage.

These individual braking resistors are UL and CSA standardized and intrinsically safe. They are available from 100-400 W each, modularly combinable up to 7.2 kW. The ohmic resistor value is available depending on the requirements of the drive controller.

  • Protection class: IP20 or IP65 optional

These braking resistors are suitable for wall mounting in a control cabinet or as roof mounting on top. Several accessories are available, such as integrated temperature switches, strain relief, waterproof connectors and touch guards.Thanks to Koch's precision engineering, overdimensioning is unnecessary: resistor values and powers are matched exactly to the requirements of the drive controller. This extends motor life and ensures reliability in critical situations.
