More compact, efficient AGV solutions with bi-directional DC/DC converters

Battery-powered Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) traditionally use low-voltage DC motors. Because the battery voltage is low, a high current must be supplied to achieve the same power. This requires larger, heavier and more expensive motors.

Low-voltage side [V]High-voltage side [V]Power [W]

Placing a DC/DC converter between the battery and the drive eliminates the need for an unwieldy low-voltage motor. The converter boosts the battery voltage, thus powering a standard 230 or 400 VAC inverter. This makes for a more compact, lighter and cost-efficient drive solution.

Additional benefits

  • better speed control and synchronization
  • lower price, weight and dimensions
  • proven common technique, no complex bestruing
  • braking energy back into the battery
  • no external battery charger required
  • insight into charging status (SoC)
  • Faster loading times, so less downtime

EPIC Power's bi-directional DC/DC converters allow standard frequency-controlled drives (three-phase or single-phase) and synchronous motors to be applied to existing battery systems.

Using AC motors instead of DC motors not only provides better control, acceleration and torque, but also higher efficiency and lower costs for the complete AGV solution.
